7 Essentials to Take with you on your Next Hike

Whether the hike you are taking lasts a day or a month, there are some essentials that you should always have with you. These essentials will not only make your hike a little easier, they could also be lifesaving. No matter how fit or prepared you are, sometimes things happen which are out of your control. 

You must have something to provide shelter, a way of getting water, and something to draw attention to yourself if you need to be rescued, such as this best survival whistle. If you were to ever be out in the wilderness for longer than you thought, you must be prepared. 

Survival Whistle

No matter how experienced or prepared you are, being lost on a hike is a terrifying experience. A good whistle will let others know where you are. It can also be used to warn other people of potential danger. They are small, lightweight, and can usually attach to your bag, so there’s no reason not to carry one. 

Water Bottle/ Filter

It is essential that you stay hydrated. A good-sized, reusable water bottle that does not leak is probably the most important thing you can carry. It is also a good idea to have a way of cleaning water in case of an emergency. There are a variety of water filters and water purification tablets on the market. 

Shelter

Flashlight

It should be obvious why a flashlight is essential for any hiker.You may also want to consider carrying spare batteries. 

Matches

Fires can ward off animals and insects, provide light, keep you warm, cook food, dry clothes, sterilize equipment, boil water and create a far-reaching signal for help. And all you need to pack is a box of good matches. 

First Aid Kit

If you injure yourself on a hike, it is essential that you prevent any sort of infection. Be sure to have something to clean wounds and cover them up. 

Sun Cream and Insect Repellent 

No matter where you are hiking, these items are essential, be sure to bring plenty of both. Put on sun cream first and then put insect repellent over the top.
