Green Living: DIY Natural Homemade Toothpastes for a Minty Party in your Mouth!
Does your mouth hanker after something fresh, natural and homemade? Well, we’ve got just the thing for you. If fluoride gives you the creeps or you just don’t like the idea of chemicals in toothpaste, then just go ahead and make your own! Ingredients like salt and baking soda provide stain-busting properties and act as mild abrasives to give tartar the boot. Peppermint, sage and lemon kill bacteria and add taste to your paste.
Super Simple Homemade Toothpaste
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon sea salt (fine)
- 1 drop peppermint essential oil
- A few drops of water
Method:
If you only have course sea salt, then grind it down in a mortar and pestle or in your coffee grinder. Mix these up in a little bowl until you get a paste. Smear your DIY toothpaste on your toothbrush and give it a go!
Ye Olde Fashioned Homemade Tooth Powder
- 2 tablespoons dried lemon rind
- 1/4 cup baking soda
- 2 teaspoons sea salt
Ye olde method:
Toss the ingredients into a food processor to create a fine powder. Just run your toothbrush under the tab and then dip the bristles into the powder. Now you can use this natural toothpaste to get that million dollar smile!
Yummy Reminiralizing Homemade Toothpaste for Kids
- 3 tablespoons baking soda
- 1 tablespoon sea salt (powdered)
- 3 drops peppermint or spearmint essential oil
- 1/2 teaspoon finely ground dried sage
- Coconut oil that has been chilled to a soft paste
Method:
If you only have course sea salt, grind it in a mortar and pestle or a coffee grinder. Mix the dry ingredients and give it your natural toothpaste a taste. Feel free to add more peppermint or spearmint if it needs a little zing. Now add one teaspoon of coconut oil at a time until you have a paste that your little champ can scoop up onto their toothbrush. Keep your natural homemade toothpaste in a cool place, or the coconut oil will liquefy making it hard to keep on the toothbrush!
