Best Hostels in Zagreb for Backpackers

Modern Zagreb hostels no longer resemble colorless, grim spots to rest after a tiresome trip.* Focusing on fun-loving youth and budget travelers, the majority of hostels are stylish, safe, and friendly. If you’re looking for a spot to drop your backpack and take a nap before exploring the bright city of Zagreb, check out these ten hotels. Find discounts when you book through this cheap hotels app.

Hostel Explorer

It’s the best place to stop if you’re planning to visit Zagreb’s old town first. Explorer is perfect for, well, explorers. It’s an old building, with the common area located in a cellar. The rooms are upstairs, and they don’t have much to offer in terms of design.

Whole Wide World Hostel & Bar

WWH&B opened its doors to budget travelers a little more than a year ago. The word “bar” in its name is there for good reason–it’s a pretty popular place for party-goers and drinkers and a nice dating spot, with happy hour every day, from 7 pm to 9 pm.

Swanky Mint Hostel

This one’s for those who hate sleeping in average hostels. Located on Ilica, basically Zagreb’s main street, this place is set inside an old textile works. Here’ you’ll find a lot of dorms, a bar (of course), and even a pool (works only in summer, though). There’s also a female-only dorm, and if you have two friends with you, you can rent a whole bedroom.

Taban Hostel

That’s another cool spot, set in the very center of Zagreb. Instead of focusing on non-stop fun and parties, Taban offers a quieter and more comfortable experience. This one fits those who are into city exploring and nothing more.

Shappy Hostel

Simple, elegant design and a great location away from the noise of the bustling city make this hostel a perfect spot for backpacking couples. So if you’re single, pack your bag, deal with your ex-wife, find some pleasant company, and book a room at Shappy. It’s a bit pricier than you expect a place like that to be.

Adriatic Train Hostels Zagreb

Adriatic Train Hostels is a unique Zagreb’s thing. Its owner has turned a sleeper train into a hostel. The main advantage of this spot is that you’ll definitely get a private room here. And if you’ve never spent a night in a sleeper train, this could be quite an interesting experience for you.

Mali Mrak Hostel

Just like Taban, Mali Mrak offers quiet, budget lodging, without everyday parties and gallons of beer. Instead you can enjoy yoga, a jazz show, or even a poetry recital. It’s also well-decorated and furnished.

Chillout Hostel

Chillout is one of the best on our list. It offers a central location, awesome Wi-Fi, and, more importantly, 24-hour reception. The hostel’s bar offers theme nights and happy hours.

Main Square

The hostel’s name already tells you how close to the city center it’s located. Main Square also offers 24-hour reception. It’s set right near Tkalčićeva where all the fun is. Here, you’ll find everything a standard hostel provides.

Chic Zagreb Hostel

Despite the word “chic” in its name, this hostel doesn’t aim to be the best establishment of this kind in Zagreb. But it tries. It’s clean, modern, and cozy enough to be called one of the best in the city. Its staff is always ready to lend a helping hand.
