Spring is a reawakening. As you prepare for longer days and warmer sunshine, it’s time to let go of things that no longer serve you. Cut the deadwood out of your life and give the new growth space! Here are some ways to clear the way for the May Queen.
Spring Cleaning
Cleaning is my least favourite activity, but I do enjoy a good decluttering. Take some time to throw out anything you don’t need, and give your home a little spruce up. You can find natural cleaners for your home here.
Garden Cleanup
Just like your home, your garden can use a little love. Please don’t rake up your fall leaves until the temperatures are consistently above 50F (10C). Many bugs, moths and butterflies lay their eggs in the fall leaves and need a chance to hatch before you remove them. I have seen a marked increase in the number of butterflies and fire flies in my garden since I started leaving the leaves.
You can prune fruit trees and late-flowering shrubs. Remove dead annuals and prune perennials. Make sure to leave a patch of spring flowers like dandelions for the pollinators to enjoy.
Feaster!
Plan a feast for you and your favourite humans. Spring is a celebration of bounty and so be sure to eat, drink and be exceedingly merry. Don’t forget to include your furry friends here as well as your wild ones – add a little extra seed to the feeder and leave out nuts for the squirrels.
Take a Hike
Find a new trail and explore the natural areas around your home. If you want an especially fun adventure, go on a treasure hunt with Geocaching. This is a fun, free hunt for treasures that other hikers have left for you – and you can leave treasures of your own!
Make a List, Check it Twice
Ever gotten to the end of the summer only to realize it whizzed by and you didn’t get to do all the fun summer things you wanted to? Same! That’s why I make a summer activities list. This includes things like go camping, eat watermelon, swim in the lake, have a picnic, go to a drive-in movie and many more. I put it on the fridge and make sure to cross something off every week. That way you get to have the best summers without letting life get in the way.
Don’t overlook the incredible power of indoor plants either! A simple flower delivery service can provide you with elegant, fragrant blooms to brighten your home or workspace. In addition to being beautiful, plants help purify the air and reduce stress levels. Bring a bit of nature inside and celebrate the Spring Equinox with a few houseplants!
Fire Away
Another key component of any spring celebration is the fire. If the weather permits, make a bonfire that you can share with friends and neighbours (the eating, drinking and being merry applies here too!)
